Explore your European Autosomal DNA - Euro DNA 1.0
The "European" human population group, as we define it, corresponds to the monophyletic lineages that contributed predominantly to populations in Europe, the Middle East, Central and South Asia beginning approximately 40,000 years ago. Most "Europeans" speak languages derived from the Indo-European family and the systematic distribution of lighter pigmentation traits (skin tone, hair color, iris color) is exclusive to this group. However, it is not true that all "Europeans" speak an Indo-European language and/or are characterized by light pigmentation.
EuroDNA 1.0 reports your European ancestry admixture much like AncestrybyDNA 2.5 does, but looks deeper within the European lineages for individuals who are predominantly European:
- Northern European subgroup (NOR)
- Southeastern European (Mediterranean) subgroup (MED)
- Middle Eastern subgroup (MIDEAS)
- SouthAsian subgroup (SA
These groups were defined empirically - that is to say, research at DNA Worldwide and their partners genetic markers reveals that the assumption of a 4-group sub-structure model within Europeans "fits" the best (though admixture within parental samples clustered as a function of geopolitical identity, and made geographic sense whatever the model).
EuroDNA 1.0 assumes a Eurasian population model - that is, that your ancestors came from Continental Europe, the Middle East and/or South Asia.
EuroDNA 1.0 includes the AncestrybyDNA 2.5 report.
The Euro-DNA 1.0 DNA Test Details
The AncestryByDNA test is very good at predicting the mixture of continental origin(s) a person comes from, but is limited in its ability to predict mixtures of intra-continental ancestral composition. For example, the test could indicate that someone is of 87% European descent and 13% Native American decent (as seen in the AncestryByDNA bar graph). To further resolve what intra-continental origin more testing is needed.
The test that further resolves ones ancestral origin beyond what the AncestryByDNA product does is called the Euro-DNA 1.0. This test is used to resolve the intra-continental ancestral composition for the European group.
To do this, the test examines 320 SNP markers (this is including the 175 AncestryByDNA markers) to look deeper within the following European lineages:
- Northern European
- Southeastern European
- Middle Eastern
- South Asian
The Euro-DNA test is only available to participants whose AncestryByDNA test results reveal greater than 50% for European ancestry, less than 15% for African ancestry, less than 40% for East Asian ancestry, and less than 15% for Native American ancestry.
If someone believes that they have >50% European ancestry and have not yet been tested using the AncestryByDNA product, then they can purchase the Euro-DNA 1.0.
If tested using the Euro-DNA 1.0, the results could indicate that someone is 70% Northern European, 17% Middle Eastern and 13% Native American (as seen in the Euro-DNA bar graph on the above right).
Very accurate percentage break in your DNA from Indo-European population segment
The EuroDNA test will yield no further information about the three population groups evaluated in the AncestryByDNA test other than European, but it will give a very accurate percentage break down in your DNA from the Indo-European population segment.
The EuroDNA 1.0 test will show percentages of a person's Indo-European ancestry from NORTHERN EUROPE (Great Britain, Scandinavia, Germany, France, Poland, Spain, Western Russia and most of the European Continental countries, etc.), or from SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE (Italy, Greece, Turkey), SOUTH ASIA (India and Pakistan - which gave rise to the Romas/Gypsies of Europe) and the MIDDLE EAST (areas in North Africa above the Sahara Desert, but south of the Mediterranean and along the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. The Middle Eastern area includes Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, etc.). The Euro-DNA test examines approximately 320 genetic SNP markers to assess the sub-divisions of your Indo-European ancestry.
Where did you collect the DNA Samples?
The primary parental samples used to develop EuroDNA 1.0 were collected in Europe, the Middle East and India. Each sample was anthropologically qualified; each individual and all 4 of their grandparents lived in the appropriate geopolitical region, spoke the appropriate language for the region, reported full ethnic affiliation with the parental group corresponding to the region and reported no known admixture for any of his/her grandparents.
When we add parental samples of unknown ethnicity from the United States to this mix, and use admixture determination methods that do not require prior information or definitions, we see a natural coalescence of individuals to genetic subgroups that make sense in geographical and historical terms. In other words, we obtain the same divisions as when we use samples with prior information (our "parental" samples), which illustrates that geopolitical and sociocultural notions of "ethnicity" correspond well to anthropological and genetic partitions within this region of the globe.
Variation within subgroups is the rule, not the exception. However, the genetic distances between European ethnicities are lower than between the world's continental populations (which means they are derived from more recent common ancestors, and share more in common genetically). Due to the complexity of European demography and history, self-held notions of ethnicity do not correspond perfectly with anthropology, as you will appreciate if you read further.
