The science behind the Family Finder DNA Test is simple. We test 710,000 areas of your DNA across 22 chromosomes and then match your DNA to individuals on the Family Finder Database, in partnership with FTDNA. The more your DNA matches with an individual and the larger the size of the match the more closely related they are.

The extensive matching system can also determine if the person is likely to be a sibling, half sibling, aunt/uncle, grandparent, 1st cousin, 2nd cousin, 3rd cousin or 4th cousin. You can even start to explore from which part of the family the match is.

Your Percentage Ethnic Ancestry

Using over 91,000 DNA Markers the Family Finder DNA Test includes the most detailed Ethnic ancestry breakdown in the world.

The first step is to find out which of the 7 main continental groups your ancestry is from (Africa, America, East Asia, Europe, Middle Eastern, Oceania and South Asia).

Within each continental group are Ancestral groups (currently 27), if your DNA shows a strong and specific signature to one of the Ancestral Populations this is shown. For example you may have a continental group of Europe but a significant match to the Ancestral group of Western Europe. Your results would show Europe (Western Europe).

Within each Ancestral Population are the representative populations that represent the Ancestral Population genetic signature. If your DNA is a specific and exact match to one of these representative populations, for example Pima in Central America. Then this would be shown. However if your Ancestry is from a wide range of populations within Central America then only the Ancestral Population of Central America can be shown.

We then report your percentage DNA breakdown between your matching populations. Most individuals will show a DNA mix of more than one population for example someone may show 90% Europe (Western Europe) and 10% Southern Europe (Italian).

* Please note that it is not possible to show the representative population unless you have an exact match to this population and no other populations within the Ancestral Population group. Some individuals may show just a Continental Group (i.e. Africa, Asia, Europe) if thier is no strong match to an Ancestral Population group (i.e. Western Europe).

You will be provided with online access to a list of matches that can be quickly sorted to allow you to focus on your near or distant cousins. You can securely contact any matches online. As more people take the Family Finder test you will be emailed when a new match comes online.
