Is consent needed for a DNA test?

Yes. Taking a DNA test has life changing consequences, therefore we encourage both the mother and the father to be fully aware of any DNA test. However we understand their are circumstances when this is not possible. Since the 1st September 2006 if you are having a DNA test carried out and are not submitting the mothers DNA for testing then a person with parental responsibility for the child must sign this consent form and send back with the DNA samples.

Full details on consent for a Paternity Test can be found on here.

Does the mother have to give consent for a child to be tested

Not in all cases.  If a child (under the age of 16 in the UK) is being tested, then a person with full parental responsibility must sign consent on behalf of the child.  If the child was born from the 1 December 2003 onwards then new changes in the law mean unmarried fathers get equal parental responsibility. All you have to do is for both parents to register the birth of your baby together. If your child was born before this date then you could only gain parental responsibility by being married or marrying the child's mother, signing an official agreement with the mother or getting a court order.

However DNA Worldwide always recommend that the mother is tested and provide Free testing of the mothers DNA.

Do I need to involve my doctor?

No. DNA testing is confidential. We do not ask for your Doctors details. The peace of mind test can be conducted at home. If the results are required for legal use then a nurse or doctor will be required to collect the DNA samples. DNA Worldwide have a network of collection sites around the world and can send a Nurse to your home, office or solicitor in the UK.
