The Use of Hair Alcohol Testing

Alcohol related conditions have risen dramatically in recent years, with alcohol now being classed as one of the most dangerous drugs ahead of ecstasy and cocaine.  New studies estimate that more than 1/5th of the UK adult population is medically classed as having an alcohol problem. The cost to society, family and children is significant. 

Not only does alcohol have toxic effects on the cells of the body but ongoing use leads to more serious psychological damage, including; depression, aggression, dependency and impairment of judgement. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) markers are absorbed into the hair structure as it grows, which remain in the hair indefinitely. These special EtG markers are only produced when there is alcohol in the bloodstream (The EtG markers are created in the Liver and are absorbed into the hair from sweat). The more EtG markers found, the greater the level of alcohol use.

Hair Alcohol Testing Explained

Of all the drugs that can be tested Alcohol is one of the most difficult to establish. This occurs because Ethanol is present in the hair of everyone, including individuals who choose not to drink. By simply being in a pub around alcohol the hair absorbs Ethanol. However EtG testing can distinguish between trace amounts or users who consume alcohol. 

Alcohol is not absorbed into the the hair directly. Instead a secondary product of the alcohol that reacts with fatty acids is detected. The EtG testing looks for the direct products of ethanol metabolism. Even though the amounts found in hair are tiny, nanograms, new technology allows our accredited lab to detect this small amount.
