Tell Me Pink or Blue Early Gender Test

Product Withdrawal

DNA Worldwide Group stopped distributing the Early Gender Test “Tell me Pink or Blue” on the 28th August 2007. The early gender test is produced by 3rd party supplier Consumer Genetics of San Jose, USA under the brand name “Tell Me Pink or Blue”.

Why is DNA Worldwide no longer selling an Early Gender Test?

The Early Gender Test is highly sensitive and, when a sterile environment in created, no males are present and all instructions are strictly followed, the manufacturer advise an accuracy rate of 95%. It is therefore essential that none of the components of the kit are contaminated in order to limit the chance of an incorrect result to 1 in 20.

Although customers are advised that the test is 95% accurate, most take it believing that they will not fall in to the incorrect 5% category.

In the experience of DNA Worldwide contamination and/or inconclusive results lead to a higher than anticipated number of cases requiring a retest. Whilst these factors are mainly outside the control of the laboratory operators, DNA Worldwide feels that the realistic level of accuracy is reduced when used in a home environment.

The world of DNA and particularly consumer DNA testing is extremely new, and as tests become available DNA Worldwide take great care to ensure their scientific validity before offering them for sale.

DNA Worldwide is satisfied that the early gender test is sound from a scientific standpoint, but during the period it sold the test it discovered that the gender test is prone to user error. When this is added to a 1 in 20 chance of an incorrect result there is a risk of the participant suffering emotional upset.

Conscious of this and the proven high level of accuracy of the other tests offered by DNA Worldwide, the Directors recognised that ‘Tell me Pink or Blue’ was not an appropriate part of their range of products and decided to stop selling the product.
