Afghan Hound
Afghan Hounds are playful, quiet, and independent. They are intelligent dogs allowing them to participate in dog sports for physical and mental stimulation whilst creating closer family bonds, these include lure coursing, racing, tracking, agility, and obedience as a sport.
Jogging can help meet their needs which also takes advantage of the Afghan Hound's ability to run. Fences need to be at least 5-feet high to contain them as they are also excellent jumpers.
They have a sensitive nature and may be aloof or suspicious with strangers. Socialisation may be needed to minimise the development of fear-based defensive aggression.
Afghan Hound History:
Afghan Hound historical records date back many thousands of years. The earliest records of the breed are more than four thousand years old on Egyptian papyrus and the walls of Afghani caves. Some legends insist that the Afghan Hound was one of the animals on Noah's Ark.
The exact origin of the Afghan Hound is debated, although they are native to the Sinai. Some believe that the breed came out of Egypt, while others insist they are descendants of the Asian Steppe Hounds. Historically Afghan Hounds were used to hunt snow leopards, panthers and wolves, however today they are known for their herding skills and suitability as a family pet.
Before 1907, exportation of Afghan Hounds from Afghanistan was illegal. The breed made its way to England once exportation was allowed.
