American Eskimo Dog
American Eskimo Dogs are usually friendly, alert, intelligent and playful dogs. They have been known to enjoy dog sports such as agility, flyball and musical canine freestyle, a sport that incorporates obedience, tricks and dance.
They respond well to reward-based training and are eager to learn. The breed is usually wary of strangers and has a tendency to bark.
American Eskimo Dog History:
The American Eskimo Dog is a relatively new breed having been bred sometime in the twentieth century as a companion dog. They used to be known as a German Spitz or an American Eskimo Spitz. The breed originated in the United States, with many believing them to come from New York City.
In the 1930s and 1940s they were very popular as circus dogs and were the first dog breed to walk a tightrope.
The American Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1994; however, the United Kennel Club recognised the breed long before that year.
