American Foxhound
The American Foxhound is usually bred for hunting although they like human companionship and usually get along well with other dogs.
They need daily exercise, ideally a long walk or jog. They have a tendency to be reserved and wary of strangers. Owing to the fact that they like to bay and need lots of exercise they are not ideal city dogs.
American Foxhound History:
The American Foxhound is a direct descendant of the English Foxhound, having first been exported to the United States in 1650 by Robert Brooke. Popularity grew immediately for them with the upper class, who used them for fox hunting, a popular sport at the time.
A century later, Lafayette gave as a gift to George Washington, a cross between an English Foxhound and a French Hound. This resulted in the creation of the modern American Foxhound, purely bred for the purpose of fox hunting.
Today the breed is considerably larger than those found in history, which has been mostly attributed to an improved diet.
In 1886, The American Foxhound was one of the first breeds recognised by the American Kennel Club.
