Black and Tan Coonhound
The Black and Tan Coonhound can be a persistent, determined, honest hunter who will stay on track no matter the terrain or conditions. The name developed from his colour and purpose – his coat is coal black with tan markings and he is used to trail raccoons. They have an even temperament and can be very outgoing and friendly. As a working scent hound, they are able to work closely with some other hounds. Some are likely to be reserved but never shy or vicious.
Black and tan Coonhound History:
The Black and Tan Coonhound originates from the southeast of the United States, in the Ozark, Blue Ridge, Appalachian and Smokey Mountains. The breed was developed from the Virginia Foxhound and bred for its colour and high sense of smell.
By crossing foxhounds and bloodhounds, breeders sought to create a dog that would have the ability to track raccoons and possum as well as deer, bears, mountain lions and other big game.
In 1945 the Black and Tan Coonhound was officially recognised by the American Kennel Club.
