Dandie Dinmont Terrier History:
The Dandie Dinmont Terrier comes from the Scottish-English border regions, known as the Cheviot Hills. Since the 1600s, they have been bred to hunt badgers. The brred is also skilful in hunting vermin, rabbit and otter.
There are numerous theories about the ancestral origins of the Dandie, the most popular being a cross between an Otterhound and another type of terrier. Another theory is that the breed evolved from the Rough-Haired Terriers of the Borders District. The breed owes its name and popularity to a novel written by Sir Walter Scott in which a character, named Dandie Dinmont, owned a pack of terriers. This makes them the only recognised brred to have been originally named after a fictionla character.
The breed remains rare worldwide, with many dedicated breeders ensuring its survival.
