Giant Schnauzer
Giant Schnauzers are Intelligent, active, and alert dogs. They seem to like dog sports such as agility, tracking, herding, carting, rally and competitive obedience.
Their stubborn tendencies may be reduced by utilising reward-based training involving small treats and favourite toys. They make good guard dogs, and as such can be reserved around strangers and may require careful socialisation to prevent or reduce defensive aggressive tendencies.
Giant Schnauzer History:
The Giant Schnauzers origins date back to the Middle Ages in Germany, France and Switzerland – imparticularly in the areas of Bavaria and Wurttenberg.
The Giant Schnauzer was developed by selectively breeding the smaller Standard Schnauzer for a breed of a larger size. Great Dane and the Bouvier des Flandres influenced its large size and the resulting dog was called the Munchener. They were developed in response to cattle ranchers requiring a larger breed of dog that could effectively herd their cattle.
The breed have excelled as a guard dog and cattle herder, with a tough coat to protect it from the elements. in the early 20th century Giant Schnauzers were exported to the United States and were used widely as police and war dogs.
Their name comes from the German word for moustache, in reference to the breeds characteristic facial hair. Giant Schnauzers are found in the Kennel Club Working dog group.
