Gordon Setter
Gordon Setters were originally bred to be bird hunting dogs this is due to their alert, active, and intelligent nature combined with a keen sense of smell. Due to the stamina of the pet Gordon Setter it means that their families need to provide physical and mental stimulation, including participation in dog sports such as field trials, hunting, agility, tracking, and obedience as sport that can also increase family bonding.
While Gordon Setters may often be seen to be stubborn, they do respond well to motivational tools such as treats and favorite toys in reward-based training.
Gordon Setter History:
The Gordon Setter is a less well known member of the Setter Family, which includes the more common Irish and English Setters. Direct ancestors of the Gordon Setter include the Spanish Pointer and other Spanish breeds. They were first referred to as "Black and Fallow Setting Dogs."
Early breeding of is believed to have included Irish Setter blood. The Duke of Gordon established the breed in 1827. Originally they were developed for hunting grouse and other similar birds. In 1842 they were introduced to the United States, where they quickly became very popular. They were officially recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1892.
