Greyhound

Greyhounds are gentle, intelligent, and quiet dogs. They have a tendency to chase and potentially harm cats or wildlife.

Greyhounds usually learn and respond well to reward-based training using treats or favourite toys. Often they enjoy dog sports such as lure coursing, racing, agility, tracking, rally and competitive obedience.

Greyhound History:

The Greyhound we see today is very similar to the domesticated breed of hunter dogs that appeared in temple drawings dating back as far back as 6000 BC. There are images and literature of the Greyhound in various Celtic, British, Irish and Scottish records dating back to the ninth century. The Romans believed Greyhounds came from Western Europe while the Celts believed they came from Greece. In Greece they referred to Greyhounds as Greek Hounds.

Greyhounds are known to make fantastic watchdogs. It is believed they once travelled with Middle-Eastern nomadic tribes to protect their camps from wild animals. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish are credited with introducing the first Greyhounds to the New World, using the dogs to frighten off Native American tribes.

In the 1800's the Greyhound was recognised by famers to have a competitive nature, with their hunter-coursing abilities, after being used for controlling the jack rabbit population. This was when Greyhound racing became established
