Havanese
Havanese are clever, playful, and usually friendly dogs. They are also good with children. Havanese respond well to reward-based training using treats or favorite toys. They appear to enjoy dog sports such as agility, flyball, tracking, musical canine freestyle, rally and competitive obedience.
Havanese History:
Havanese, a member of the Bichon family, means “Little Dog from Havana” even though the dog is thought to have originally originated in the Mediterranean. in the 16th century the Havanese was introduced to Cuba by Spanish traders, they made gifts of the little dogs as a way of sugar-coating trade between the two countries.
During the Cuban Revolution, the Havanese faced extinction as the majority were left behind when their wealthy owners fled the country. Only two reported families, the Perez and the Fantasio families, managed to smuggle their Havanese with them into the United States. In the 1970’s only 11 dogs brought to the United States helped the Havanese to make a strong comeback. Today they are cited as being one of the fastest-growing registrations in the American Kennel Club.
