Irish Setter
Irish Setters are known to be very playful, happy, energetic, and usually friendly dogs. These qualities coupled with their speed and keen sense of smell make the Irish Setters well suited for their original use as a bird hunting dog.
Owing to the stamina of the pet Irish Setter, as with all other hunting breeds, its family will be required to provide enough physical and mental challenges for the dog, including dog sports such as field trials, hunting, agility, tracking, and obedience as sport which can also help the dog and family bond together.
Irish Setter History:
The Irish Setter was developed in eighteenth century Ireland. They were created from a mix of the Old Spanish Pointer, setting spaniels and early Scottish setters. In Gaelic, their name is “Madra Rua” which is translated as “red dog.”
In the early 1800’s the Earl of Enniskellen has been given the credit of developing the rich red coat the Irish Setter has today. In the early 19th century Irish immigrants first exported the Irish Setter to the United States.
