Italian Spinone
The Italian Spinone has an easy going, intelligent, and usually friendly nature. The They have been known to be both sensitive and stubborn, however they do respond well to motivational tools such as treats and favorite toys in reward-based obedience training.
Being bred originally for hunting, they require plenty of physical and mental activities, and enjoy dog sports such as tracking, hunting, field trials, agility and obedience as sport which also help them bond with their families. The Italian Spinone tends to have a moderate steady trotting gait which makes them a great companion for people who like jogging with their dogs. They also have excellent swimming and retrieving abilities. The Spinone Italiano can also bond with people as service or animal-assisted therapy dogs.

The Italian Spinone was developed in Italy in the 15th century to be a pointer, hunter, and retriever. Their is much speculation as to the exact origin of the breed with several popular theories. Most people think that the breed was descended from the Spanish Pointer, while others feel they come from the Russian Pointer. Other theories include being descended from the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, the German Wirehaired Pointer or the Pudelpointer all played a role.
The Italian Spinone is thought to be one of the first gundogs. Like many breeds, due to lack of breeding during World War II the Spinone Italiano almost fell into extinction, being saved by crossbreeding with other wirehaired breeds. In 2000 the breed was recognised by the American Kennel Club and, though very popular in Europe, has not fully established itself.
