Komondor
Komodors are a large, muscular breed, mainly known for their protective, unusually dense coat of heavy white cords that naturally form with age. The coat serves as a cover to body parts in case of attack, it helps them to blend in with their flock and protects them from severe weather extremes.
For ten centuries they have been a working dog in Hungary, however more recently they are also found in the show and obedience rings in the United States.
Komondor History:
The Komodors origins are not certain it is believed they descend from the Russian Owtcharka dog, which was introduced to Hungary by the Huns during the 4th century. The strain of sheep known as Racka, bred by the Hungarian Magyars, is said to closely resemble the Komondor, allowing these dogs to blend in with the flocks they guarded. They protected the sheep so well that it is thought they were directly the cause of the decline and elimination of wolfs in Hungary.
The Komodor line was kept pure by the Magyars who did not allow interbreeding. It was not until the 1920s that the Komondor began spreading to different countries when owners started entering the dogs in shows.
