Kuvasz

The Kuvasz is a courageous, bold and fearless dog. They are one of the larger working breeds, being well-muscled and agile. Their double coat features a coarse guard of hair that protects a soft, fine undercoat.

They are a spirited dog with a keen sense of intelligence, determination, and curiosity. They have been known to be very sensitive to praise and likewise to blame. They can be extremely protective of loved ones even to the point of self-sacrifice. To accepted strangers they are generally polite, but can be suspicious and very discriminating in making new friends.

They make excellent guards, having the ability to act on their own initiative at just the right moment without any instruction needed.

Kuvasz History:

The ancestors of the Kuvasz breed many thousands of years ago came to Hungary from Tibet. The breed was reserved for use by nobility as guardians and big game hunters during the Middle Ages. From 1458 to 1490, Matthias Corvinus I the reigning King of Hungary at the time, is credited with refining the Kuvasz into the breed we recognise today. Their numbers rapidly declined during WW1 and WW2 but their presence in Germany helped keep the breed from extinction.
